After church Sunday we headed across the bridge to celebrate our anniversary and Aunt Brey's birthday at Grammy and Poppy's house.
But first! A stop at the Pop Shop for lunch. With no dietary prohibitions we were able to enjoy ourselves. I had Carolina barbecue in honor of our wedding* and Kevin gourmet-ed up his burger (scallions and roasted red peppers, oh my!).
Really, though I'm pretty sure we came for dessert. There were so many delicious ice cream/sundae/shake options that I couldn't even process the menu. Rather than let everyone choose, I made an executive decision and had the "Elvis has left the building" sundae delivered to our table. It was a peanut butter/chocolate themed banana split and it was received with much enthusiasm.
(This is a good parenting trick, too. The children rarely complain when something just arrives but can often be disappointed when given a choice and end up making the wrong choice or have to make a compromise. I'm all for choice, for learning the important lessons of opportunity cost and negotiation, but not necessarily at the expense of a pleasant anniversary lunch. We'd already pressed our luck with a wait for our table and a wait for our food. The children were oh-so-patient and well behaved, but, like all preschoolers, it could flip at the drop of a hat.)
On to Grammy and Poppy's house, were Peter and Lucy were happy to play with Maelynn** and Maelynn was happy to play with Peter and Lucy and Thomas. On this visit, Maelynn seemed especially interested in playing with Thomas, perhaps since she has another baby cousin, or perhaps because Thomas could get down and play on this visit. (Unlike last time, when he'd certainly be a tasty treat for two gigantic dogs.***)
Kevin and I were able to sneak in a bit of alone time, although not of the romantic sort. More of the visit Whole Foods and buy vitamins sort. But we were alone (with Thomas), which is a rare enough event to make it special. We didn't want to spend too much time away since Bridget and Sean were visiting to celebrate Bridget's 25th birthday.****
And for dessert? Cookie cake. This cookie is gone, by the way, with a little help from Kevin's department. Bridget took a birthday cookie cake home, too. It was a great idea. Thanks, Debbie!
*FYI, not at all Carolina BBQ, not either Eastern nor Western style. Argh!
**And eat Maelynn's snacks. I'm pretty sure the point of visiting Grammy and Poppy's house for Lucy is to "drink milk from Maelynn's bottle" (sippy cup) and eat Maelynn's food.
***Not that the dogs would eat the baby, but they are part pit bull.
****Not 25th, but it could be. I wish I looked that good.
