I love it when we can find ways to bring our Bible stories to life.
For Lazarus? White crepe paper, some essential oils, and a tent became all we needed to reenact the story of the man who died and came back to life.
And even though the preschool set doesn't understand terms like "foreshadow," Peter had a very curious look on his face after we finished reading the story of Lazarus in our children's Bible. "That reminds me of another story," he said. "You know, when Jesus was in the cave, too."
The inspired moment in this activity was the crepe paper, for sure. I'd thought about toilet paper, but it's perforated. Crepe paper is cheap ($1/2 rolls at the dollar store) and stretches to accommodate the fleeing bodies of little children.
This activity ended the way most do, in which the children commandeer the original intent and make it their own. In this case, it involved so very much peppermint oil, crepe paper tied to their pretend handcuffs, and their tent, turned upside down, to prevent anyone from coming inside.
