We went to a playdate with new playgroup friends yesterday. The children in this playgroup are all much smaller than our typical social circle, and I joined it expressly to find same-age friends for Lucy and Thomas.
I'd had some reservation bringing Peter along, but then I realized that he's so very good with younger children. He's perhaps better with smaller children than bigger ones. He looks at the big boys playing at parks or the library with a bit of wistfulness, as if he wants to play with them so very badly but just doesn't know how. Or is afraid to join in. It's probably the latter.
With the smaller children, though, both Peter and Lucy are quite happy. It's why we never had any reservations about having another child, and why Thomas fits in so well around here. There always are moments of "I WANT TO HIT THOMAS!" or the less mean-spirited but similarly dangerous "I WANT TO PICK UP THOMAS BY THE NECK BECAUSE THAT'S THE EASIEST WAY TO DO IT!"
But there are as many - and perhaps even more? - moments like the one above.
