Our rainy day went lickity-split fast, and here's how:
(1) Go outside early and often. Swing, swing, swing. Catch gigantic bumble bees with Penelope. Nap on Mama's chest while she plants some seeds. Break ceramic tiles with hammers for our garden. Also hammer: weeds, rocks, tricycle.
(2) Come inside for some artwork and preschool. Paint and paint and paint. Mix red and white on pink paper and make SUPER MUCH PINK!!!!!!!!!! (Clothing optional, naturally.)
(3) Go outside even in the rain, and watch the raindrops melt away your artwork. Splash in puddle. Find bigger puddles to splash in. Find smaller but muddier puddles to splash in. Hear thunder! Back inside...
(4) Enjoy an indoor (rain) shower and rinse off the many layers of dirt, marker, and paint.
(5) Pretend there's a thunderstorm in the bedroom with the black-out curtains. Slam lids and boxes, flash lights, shriek wildly. Find a secret stash of "going to Grandpa's house" glowsticks and see the funny photographs you can take. Find a pail full of change and stick hundreds of coins in your piggy bank. Save a few for the parking meter. ("But only five or six, OK?")
I'm really, really loving these spring days, even when it's rainy like it was today. It's so much easier keep atop their moods and needs if they can just tumble outside, shoes optional. (Some days, clothing optional.) Unlike even last fall, Peter and Lucy are happy to entertain themselves in our yard and stay in the boundaries. I've been able to work on a few outside projects while they play.
Thomas, on the other hand, has entered a bit of a fussy period. He'll more often than not start crying when I set him down, holding up his arms to be picked up again. It's fine - after four years of this I think I could go through life with my left hand tied behind my back - but still! A mama's got to tend to the important things in life, like breakfast. And the bathroom.
