Thomas and I were Sophia's target
I read about making paint balloons in this book and though "holy cow, YES!"
Perhaps I should have read the instructions more closely. Instead, as I always do, I wrote down "paint balloons" on my list of ideas and ran with it.
The problem was that I didn't have enough pressure to blow up a balloon with paint. So, we had balloons with paint and water. Not exactly the paint balloon barrage I had in mind, but still fun.
A good tip - skip water balloons and use real balloons. They don't break right away, so you can throw them five or ten times. Good when you'd like your pile of balloons to last for more than five minutes, plus it adds a bit of randomness to the explosion when it finally happens. Bonus: it teaches problem solving, as the kids have to figure out just how to pop these bouncing balloons.
After the last balloon was popped, there was much swinging, digging in the sandbox, and scavenging for snacks. You'd think we never feed these kids!
