We joined new friends on Monday to explore a creek full of crayfish, minnows, snails, and weird slime balls.
It was great fun! My only regret was that I'd not packed better creek walking shoes for myself. My plastic flip-flops, while waterproof, weren't exactly great for slippery rock navigation. Luckily, Thomas didn't take a dive in the water when I did!
Also, I'm a little sad that I wasn't able to help Peter catch one of the giant crayfish. Peter and Lucy were able to catch smaller crayfish themselves, although the water was so thick with life it may have been more difficult to avoid catching a crayfish.
In true Peter and Lucy fashion, the began the playdate nervous about the water (and falling, and getting wet, and perhaps being pinched by the "little lobsters"), quickly requested snacks and a change of clothes, and then returned to the creek with the express purpose of getting as wet as possible.
Thomas would have loved to splash in the creek if I didn't think he'd try to eat a rock or snail. This baby is becoming more and more of a toddler every day. It's equal measures fascinating ("look! he can tell us that he wants to look at this object of interest!") and exasperating ("look! he's screaming and twisting his body out of my arms so that he can get to this object of interest!")*
Before all three children fell asleep on the drive home, Peter and Lucy were concocting playdates with their new little friends, hoping to invite them over and planning just what toys they'd share. Or, in the case of one little girl, the dolls she planned on not sharing and "putting in a safe place so that they would be safe and she would know that they were safe."
*In all honesty, the exact ratio of fascinating/exasperating is a function of said object of interest and how dangerous it is and what the older Davis-Rosses are up to. It's all fascination when Thomas wants a banana and his brother and sister are busy coloring. And when he wants to eat a bag of popcorn while his brother and sister need to change their clothes but can't because their wet underwear has the audacity to stick to their bottoms?? Just a bit more exasperating.
