Our original plan for today was to visit Franklin Square Park, knock a few items off our summer fun list, and have a blow-out great time with Colin, Quinn, and Rhys.
Then, I reconsidered. It would be pricey (for the train ride to center city, plus the carousel and/or mini golf); it would be a long day (would we even make it back to the SEPTA station for a train home? or would we be lost to Chinatown forever?); and, perhaps critically, I learned that the on-site hamburger stand makes a Butterscotch Krimpet/caramel ice cream sundae. I immediate refiled Franklin Square under "must do with Kevin" and changed our plans to Smith Playground.
We had some good fun and some very emotional moments. Peter showed his monkey side as he and the boys climbed the giant spider web. In flip flops, to boot!* Thomas tried his hardest to climb aboard the climbing merry-go-round, the one with twenty-five other children and fast spinning speeds. Yep, that one. This baby, I tell you, will not be stopped.
Lucy hadn't slept well the night before and it showed - she had little patience for anything that wasn't her vision. "Her vision" included: hoarding all of the baby doll supplies. And: hoarding all of the pink tricycles. She flipped out on a little boy who dared climb on the hot-pink trike she dragged behind the baby pink trike she actually road. When his mother came to intervene, Lucy stammered a sad little, "but it's my favorite color!" as I pried her tight grip off the extra trike.
Peter jumps, Thomas plays with the lights, and I'm trying very hard not to fall asleep..
She fell asleep on our drive home, and as she continued to sleep, Peter, Thomas and I jumped on the bed. Well, I left the jumping to Peter and tried very hard not to fall asleep. I'd dared to dream the dream of three sleeping children, and instead had monkeys jumping on the bed.
*We have these ongoing discussions about "good park shoes" and "good bike riding shoes," but it always seems that he ends up in flip flops. I'm surprised he's not lost a toe yet.
