On Tuesday, in between the earthquake and picking up vegetables at the farm, Peter started riding a two-wheeler.
I was inside making dinner, but the story as it was told to me goes like this: Peter wanted to ride a two-wheeler; Kevin put him on and held him upright for a few minutes; Peter took off like a rocket. There was no hesitation, no looking back, and - alas for his poor bike - no stopping him, save a collision with the ground.
Wednesday, I took him to a local park with a bike-friendly track so Peter could practice the finer parts of turning.
And here he is: bike riding. (Video links here and here.)
(He's riding Lucy's new bike, by the way. In a complicated set of negotiations, he and Lucy agreed to swap bikes for the rest of the summer, since her bike is bigger than his.)
Peter is ridiculously proud of his new accomplishment, as he should be. It's no small shakes riding a bike by yourself! He's not the most outgoing Davis-Ross, but this business about riding a bike without any training wheels! had him telling any adult whose attention he could capture. (And a few who weren't paying attention.)
Now, to work on getting on and getting off the bike. I'm not sure how much longer his current "fall down with the bike" strategy will work. Someone's for sure going to break an arm.
GOOD JOB, Peter! I am so proud of you and I can't wait to see you ride your bike again. Lucy, it was so nice of you to switch bikes with Peter.
