When our playgroup friends decided to visit the pool on Monday, I knew we could make Lucy's (birth)day by bringing a special treat to share with her friends. After lunch Lucy very carefully picked out some pink frosted cookies to share.* As our friends arrived at the pool, Lucy approached each and every one of them to ask if they like cookies (they did) and if they'd like some of her pink frosted cookies (they would).
When it was time for snacks, she once again gathered all of the friends up to the picnic table, where the tub of cookies was inhaled in record time. In between cookie bites, the kids sang "Happy Birthday" to Lucy, and they proceeded to form a "birthday train" and run up to the playground. It was a party, for sure, although we'd not planned on it.
Later, when Lucy'd had enough pool time, she asked if she could change clothes and have a hot dog from the snack bar. "Because it's a special treat for my birthday," she cooed, batting her eyes. Oh, little one, how can I say no to that? Even if I did preface every bite you took with, "you'll never not ever have another hot dog from the snack bar again, right Lucy?" (Who wants to eat embalming fluid, anyway?)
*She definitely wanted to pick out several types of treats before the cookies, incluidng donuts and a garishly decorated Disney Princess cake. When her eyes saw the cake they bugged so far out of her head that I feared for her vision.
