A few months ago I realized that we have a GPS unit and can do some geocaching. I'm not even sure what put this thought in my head, but when I poked around the Internet I learned that there's a cache next to the tree swing on campus. Perfect!
We stopped by the tree swing on our way home from the train station yesterday. It had recently just re-opened, and the kids were excited beyond excited to swing on the swing.
After they were done swinging (read: after I was done pushing them), I had them find the cache, hidden in a "bush that looks like an elephant." Lucy found the bush and the cache right off, and when she opened the little box she was in heaven.
"Look! A bracelet! Another bracelet! A lady sticker! Another lady sticker! Look at all this stuff! Can I have it all?"
We dug through our backpack to find enough ephemera to replace what we'd taken. In went our beach tag, a bandaid, a bouncy ball, and a quarter. Out came two lady stickers (Cinderella, FYI), another sticker for Peter, and a pink bracelet.
Now, there's a "prize box" hidden in the elephant tree near the tree swing. It's possible it will be as much of a draw as the swing itself. I've made sure to put a few random trinkets in our bag for our next visit. Also, there's a cache hidden in a park near our friends' house that the kids are keen on visiting. I'm pretty sure this is a hobby that will meet Lucy's need for acquiring random junk, and my need for getting random junk out of our house. There aren't many positive-sum games in parenting, but here's one.
