We invited our playgroup over Friday to celebrate Thomas's first birthday. Our friends have really seen Thomas grow up, and it was nice to share his special day with them.
And our day until our friends came over? It was a long, long day spent waiting and waiting and waiting. There were several "how much longer?" and even a clever attempt to cheat time by eating lunch at 10:30 - since, you know, our friends were coming over after lunchtime.
It wasn't exactly the best time for a clock-reading lesson, but I could see into the future and it wasn't pretty. Time is an unstoppable force, unless you don't exactly understand how it works, in which case it's just a pain in the rear. I drew a picture of our clock, pointed out the different hands, and instructed them that when the clocks matched our friends would be near.
At the strike of two, the children (all clad in Eagles gear, courtesy of Miss Alicia) stood sentry at the door, waiting to welcome our guests as they arrived twos by twos and threes by threes.
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. My camera was misplaced in the fun, so there are no pictures of Thomas thoroughly enjoying his cupcake treat, nor of him loudly protesting for another. There are no pictures of the impromptu parade, complete with very loud musical instruments and children riding in doll strollers. There are no pictures of monkeys jumping on beds, shouting loudly, turning on and off lights.
(baths at 4:30 p.m. can only mean one thing: an early, early bedtime)
Mostly, there were good times, but there were some high emotions, too, and after our friends left the Davis-Ross children were done for the day. There's only so much anticipation and excitement and sugar and playing these children can take!
Peter waited for Kevin wearing a freaky Halloween mask from my childhood;
Thomas cries every time he sees it
Lucy fell asleep at 5:30, still wearing the sparkle-y pink ballerina costume Miss Alicia had given her. Thomas quickly followed, asleep before 6:15. Peter was down before 7, and suddenly the whole evening opened up before us. It was almost better than hiring a babysitter.
