so...
That mold issue? Huge. Or at least, it seems huge. I'm kind of going nuts sniffing every last corner, sniffing rugs and under tables, trying to figure out just what's contaminated and what's not.
I just found a huge pile of ruined goods. It's sad and annoying, but thankfully it's stuff we're not using and has been jammed into the office/catch-all space. Still. We had hopes for using it, one day. There was a lot of life left in that chair, those baby toys. And now? There's a lot of life IN that chair, those baby toys.
This leaves me here: sad, annoyed, discouraged. I just want it to be over, this cleaning and sorting and tossing out of things that we like and need and really don't want to get rid of. Aside from the three dozen toilet paper tubes I've collected* we don't really have extra stuff hanging around.**
A few aspects of this mold situation make me nuts, chief of which is that all of those nice, wooden toys we've gathered for the children? CONTAMINATED. We would have been better off with plastic toys and the VOCs they emit rather than inviting all manners of microorganisms to take refuge in our porous natural fibers.
I started drafting a "wish list" for our next home. Top request: not a cave. (Also: please no mice. And: bigger kitchen. Would be nice: more light.)
*Probably a close estimate. They seem like great raw material for crafts or projects, so I can't bear to get rid of them, but I've not found anything good to do with them either. Thus, they gather.
**We all have extra stuff hanging around. We could easily get rid of 70 percent of our belongings and be happy. Truthfully, though, we don't have much "stuff," especially when compared with others.
