Thomas with the big kids; Julia with her new guitar;
Lucy with clenched fists, wanting to hit Julia...
We happily celebrated Julia's third birthday with a music/pizza/cake party. There was singing and dancing and parachuting and musical instruments, just enough keep the kids happy and excited for the promise of what was beyond the closed double-doors...
...pizza! and juice boxes! and cheese crackers!
As Peter and Lucy sat down to enjoy their early lunch, Peter took in all the spoils of the party and shouted, "this is SOME party!"
Kevin occasionally has moments where he laments some "joylessness" in our family life. It's party from the times when we enjoy a special treat as a family - an ice cream out, for example - and he knows my little head is thinking, "HFCS! Artificial colors! so much sugar! thisisnotgood, thisisnotgood, thisisnotgood!" And then no one enjoys this "special treat" because we're racked with guilt. (The little ones do enjoy it, of course, and then are insane monkeys afterward, the aftermath of which they decidedly don't enjoy.)
Our "joyless" family life, though, allowed the novelty of a juice box and cheese crackers to be noteworthy, celebratory, and truly the stuff of parties.
Also of note at this party: Thomas posed in the picture with the big kids; the balloon at the end; and Lucy's irrepressible jealousy at Julia's new tiny guitar. As Lucy put it, "I didn't want Julia to have that guitar, and I wanted to hit her." Also telling, Lucy hypothesized that Julia received a new guitar "because her old one got moldy." Wonder why she thought that?*
*Two minutes before I typed this, I discovered yet another mold contaminated item. For realsies.
